The South American horned frog (Ceratophrys ornata) has a mouth almost as wide as its entire body. Despite being only 13 cm long, it will attempt to eat almost anything — mice, other frogs, and even hands that get too close!
Horned frogs have the strongest bite force of any frog, relative to their size. They possess tooth-like projections in their upper jaw for gripping prey. Once they bite, they never let go voluntarily.
These frogs are sit-and-wait predators. They bury themselves in leaf litter or soil with only their head exposed, waiting motionless for prey to wander within striking distance. Then — SNAP!
Pacman frogs have absolutely no fear response. They will aggressively attack creatures many times their own size, including human fingers, dogs, and snakes. Their confidence is simultaneously impressive and concerning.
